With this years small Lunar New Year event upon us its time to take a look at its mechanics and rewards.
General

The main rewards of it are the Nian Strongbox and the Half-Taels which can be used to buy items in the event or ubisoft store (see Reward).
The Nian, a deadly beast feared by locals, is rumored to prowl the seas
Lore
In real life is the Nian a monster of legends that would come out at the beginning of the Chinese New Year to feed by raiding villages and fields. At some point this villages discovered after an attack that the beast was afraid of the color red, so they put up red lanterns, wear red clothes, throwed firecrackers and made loud music, by drums, to intimidate the Nian.
In Skull and Bones rumors spread that an mysterious monster is sinking ships on the open seas with some saying the Nian itself is coming for them spreading fear amongst the inhabitants of the indian ocean. However upon investigating this mysterious sight, it turns out to be a group of rogues with a ship, similar in design to the one used by Li Tian Ning, that are ravaging the seas under the cover of the Nian.
Approach
This event features an world event with two phases which take place at the same position in contrast to the different locations featured in the Halloween event.
It is located in the south east of the map in the Southern Basin between the outposts Grande Falaise and Dutchman's Camp (see the Image).
1st Phase
In this phase is a progress bar displayed at the top showing the participants progress on spawning the Boss and the second phase. To progress this phase you need to fight the spawned Kuharibu's one after the other for a total of 3 or wait until the 15 minutes have passed to complete the phase and initiate the second one.
Please note that the two phases don't share a timer so you have 15 minutes for the first one and 30 minutes of the second one.
Reward
When defeating a Kuharibu you will be awarded with Tylosaurus Flesh,
Monstrous Tooth and 5
Half-Taels. For completing the phase you'll receive 2000 silver.
2nd Phase
This second and final phase features the boss fight against The Nian an rank 12 rogue elite warship. It shares similarities in its behaviour to the rank 16 Li Tian Ning encounter. As such does it move quite fast in circles and also targets players for a ramming attack.
Additionally does it have some uniques attacks to keep an eye out for:
1. Ram / Charge
Compared to Li Tian Ning he will more aggressively charge to a player trying to ram him. If you're focussed by him he will and stand still he will stop after a successfully ramming you and turn around to initiate the next ram attack.
While the ram attack doesn't do a lot of damage if braced it can be devastating when its combined with one of his other attacks.
2. Long / Wide Range Barrage
This attack fires salves of ballista like projectiles on one or both sides in quick salvos up to a range of 400+ meters. The individual projectiles are slow and deal low damage, but inflict high flooding and piercing charges upon you.

3. Shotgun Barrage
Similar to 2., but more focussed like a shotgun inflicting heavy damage and instantly applies the piercing and flooding status effect upon you. This attack is only one side at a time with a range of around 200m.
So, when fighting it I recommend to keep the following points in mind:
1. Target the weakpoints
When first fighting the ship it can seem like it has no weakpoints, but when it stops and hides itself in a smoke there are two exposed weakpoints on the top deck in the front/middle of each side. Hitting those can save you quite some time, but be fast as they aren't exposed for long.
2. Keep an eye on the buoys
The Nian will drop from time to time rank 12 Baited Buoy's which will deploy salvos of torpedos every X seconds. While the torpedos are not homing, they still do good damage and high flooding damage.
As the buoys itself have very low hp's its best to clear them quickly and continue with the main fight.

3. Charge Attacks
The Nian will most of the time try to ram a player when driving around. However sometimes he uses that in combination with his close range, shot gun like, attack which will kill you in 1 or 2 shots. So if you're running a low survivability build keep an eye out for that.
Difficulty
The boss like most others scales its health and stats with the amount of players participating in the event. This means that with a group of 3 well equipped (DPS) players it can be a lot easier than with the whole server, like 8 people, participating.
Recommended Loadouts
Compared to other bosses in the game, does this one not have any special weaknesses or damage types featured in his attacks, but instead just has a high amount of health. For this is there no special loadout to recommend, but instead a loadout should be used that fits the own playstyle with a good amount of dps and survival.
However one interesting idea would be a DPS loadout, like a fire build, with an armor equipped so you can restore the severe damage taken when likely being sunk.
Reward
After defeating it you will get several items including the Nian Strongbox.
Achievement
Opening 20 Nian Strongbox will reward the Enter the Nian seasonal achievement and corresponding badge.
